Oahu, Hawaii

Where it’s easy to find your perfect stretch of paradise

Hawaii is arguably the most exotic place you can go without a passport. Between Obama family visits and the 2011 movie The Descendants, Oahu, the most cosmopolitan of the islands, seems to be having a moment. And, because visitors are increasingly exploring Oahu’s lesser-known beaches to the east, north, and west, those areas have stepped up their tourist-friendly attractions to accommodate the rush.

So rent a car and get as far from Waikiki as you can, as quickly as speed limits allow. Head east and cross the Koolau range on the Pali Highway. As you wind down the mountain, a panorama of the Windward side—the sprawling residential valley where the First Family vacations—will come into view. Kailua Beach Park, great for families, and Lanikai, a gorgeous half-mile strip of water and sand with hiking nearby, are safe bets for all-day beach outings.

Winter is high-surf season in Hawaii, and the North Shore is the best place to watch big-wave riders. Start in Haleiwa, home to Matsumoto (808-637-4827, matsumotoshaveice.com), which deals the island’s best syrup-drenched shave ice. Head north toward Kahuku and keep your eyes peeled for Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach Park (home of the Banzai Pipeline), and Sunset. You might also bump into surfers at the Kahuku Superette (808-293-9878), a dinky grocery where they stock up on poke—a local salad of seasoned raw ahi—by the pound.

On the island’s west side, stop for a history lesson at Pearl Harbor and then continue on to the golf-and-beach-resort development of Ko Olina for a snorkel and dolphin tour with Ko Olina Ocean Adventures (808-396-2068, koolinaoceanadventures.com). The town of Ko Olina is also where Disney recently plunked down its latest resort, the Aulani (714-520-7001, resorts.disney.go.com; from $399). In Kapolei, refuel with fish tacos and burgers made with locally raised beef at the new Monkeypod Kitchen (monkeypodkitchen.com).

What’s New Around Waikiki

1. DINING Local foodies love the pop-up restaurant Miso & Ale (misoandale.com) and a hipster ramen joint in Chinatown called Lucky Belly (50 N. Hotel St., 808-531-1888). The dining scene’s most exciting newcomer is Morimoto (1775 Ala Moana Blvd., 808-943-5800), a high-energy sushi restaurant from the iron chef Masaharu Morimoto.

2. DRINKING The new L’Aperitif bar at the elegant beachfront Halekulani (2199 Kalia Rd., 808-923-2311) features cocktails created by famed Ritz Paris bartender Colin Field. The Waikiki Ocean Club (waikikioceanclub.com; admission $89), a floating deck anchored a six-minute paddle away from the Hilton Hawaiian Village pier, offers watersports, plus DJs and drinks after sundown.

3. STROLLING Visit the Bishop Museum (1525 Bernice St., 808-847-3511) through February 4 to see a new exhibition about Alfred Shaheen, the textile designer who gave the world the aloha shirt, or stop by the new Damascus Room, filled with Islamic art, at Shangri-La (4055 Papu Cir., 808-734-1941), the former estate of tobacco heiress Doris Duke.

Where to Stay

The Trump Waikiki (808-683-7777, trumpwaikiki.com; from $399), which opened in 2009, pumps up the party vibe with a sixth-floor lounge that’s the top perch for watching Waikiki’s Friday night fireworks over the water. On the surfcentric North Shore, Turtle Bay (808-293-6000, turtlebayresort.com; from $229) offers farm tours, horseback riding, beach yoga classes, guided fishing excursions, and surfing lessons. Your best budget option is the boutique Hotel Renew (888-485-7639, hotelrenew.com; from $208), nicely located just off Waikiki Beach.

Getting There

The nine-hour direct flight aboard United—roundtrip fares start just above $1,000—gets you to most island hotels in time for sunset mai tais. Bring your Ambien for the reverse redeye flight home. For maximum freedom on the island, rent a car and buy a disposable cooler for packing snacks in the trunk.

I read the reviews on this hotel, and my husband and I decided to give it a try. This hotel was awesome the first time we stayed for our honeymoon, greeting us with freshly squeezed pineapple juice and ice cold towels, and friendly smiles. Waiting for us in our room was a bottle of champagne with chocolate covered strawberries, with a hand written personal note thanking us for our business. The rooms are very modern, comfortable, and the view in almost all the rooms is ocean. There isn’t tons of people everywhere because it’s a small boutique hotel, and everyone staying there seems to be open and friendly, just like the staff.

You can rent for free bogie/surf boards, beach mats/chairs, towels, all for FREE! It’s a miracle! Not to mention you’re steps away from Waikiki Beach.

The second time my husband and I stayed there, it was the same experience, just fabulous!

The third time was the same experience, with appetizers sent to our room with a handwritten note, thanking us for our business again. This past time we stayed there we decided to go to happy hour. It has simple but delicious appetizers, and fabulous affordable drinks. Beers are $4 and cocktails are $6, which are fantastic prices for the area. Let me just say that the bartender, Jacqueline, made the BEST margarita I’ve ever had! This is coming from someone who makes handmade margaritas (I refuse to buy the mixes). It tasted super fresh and it wasn’t weak, it had lots of tequila in it!

Hotel Renew is a fantastic experience overall. They treat you like a celebrity, and have the ultimate customer service. You don’t feel like just another tourist visiting Waikiki, but you feel valued and taken care of. I’ll never stay anywhere else! My husband and I even stay here then travel all over Oahu because we want the Hotel Renew experience every time. Best hotel in Waikiki, hands down.

I had a great holiday stay in Waikiki, mainly thanks to the staff at the hotel. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Keiki at the breakfast bar was very pleasant, Marjorie and Mhey were also very friendly and kept the room pristine throughout my stay. Kris made some great recommendations throughout the course of my stay that made for some memorable moments I would have otherwise missed out on. Also special thanks to Kai, Mike, Paula, Grace and Dave, all of you were great and made it a special stay. I will definitely return on my next trip to the islands. Aloha!

I returned here on business for the second time this year. Upon arrival, I was reminded why we select Hotel Renew: it’s the incredibly friendly staff. Each day of our stay, Adam and Daniel looked out for our every need. They remembered us by name instantly, and made us feel like we never left. And be sure stop by the bar for a drink with Jackie, who provides tasty drinks and great entertainment with her engaging personality. The hotel is everything you’d want from a boutique hotel, but it’s the staff that will keep us coming back.

They gave great advice on how to get around and where to find places we wanted to visit. Breakfast is included & whilst its a small area, you can take it up to your room. Also free super fast WiFi, not many hotels offer this. We had a king size bed with top quality mattress. Quiet room with balcony and a great view of the beach. Security safe. shower & bath. Air con & wardrobe with hanging space. Beach towels, mats and boogie boards free of charge each day.

It took me ages to sit down and review the hotel, but I have to say, I think of Hawai´i every day since we left… and one of the reasons I do this is because I would like to help people in hesitate, when you go to Hawai´i you don´t wanna spend all the time you have dealing with hotel – problems, right? I was quite nervous before, but all my worries were just blown away.

Hotel Renew was great! I have to say it was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at and I have been in a few. We have had an upper floor, city view room, the hotel is really just steps from the beach so it is not a big deal not to stay in “beach front”, because all the beach front hotels have the busy main street in front of them anyway!!! so it was quite nice to be not in the first row but still not far away. The hotel inside is new or renovated, however it´s really nice, no big hawaiian designs but just nice stylish room, HUGE and sooo comfy bed, nice bathroom and a small hallway with a wardrobe, there is a small drink fridge so you can put some fruit there or so too. The staff was friendly and helpfull, you can have some beach chairs and towels for free – it was great as people pay for hiring these on the beach like 50 $ a day… It was really quite, we have never heard anything from other rooms or so. The breakfast buffet is quite small but was enough for us but it is happening in the hotel lobby (the hotel is quite small compare to other ones in Hawai´i so there is no restaurant) and there is not enough chairs for all the people I would say, we were lucky to have a seat every time but I saw few people waiting for a bit. But as I saw the bigger hotels they even had a queue in front of the restaurants so than I thought this wasn´t so bad, some of these hotels are promising “take away breakfast” on the beach – but it is just because you actually have to take all you can before somebody else will do it and you go to find yourselves spot on the beach, because there is no room for you in the restaurant.

Hotel great value for the price, I would recommend it for sure, it´s for someone who likes a bit of a privacy and who likes to stay in a nice place on a holiday (for me it just makes the whole thing much better). It is not an empty luxury, you don´t pay the extra $$ for some chandelier or so, but you have all you need – I mean, you are mainly spending time outside anyway but you are gonna feel good inside too. I think for this money this is the gem, and BIG plus – it really looks just like on the internet websites pictures. We just had a great time, we loved Hawai´i, we traveled all around the Ohau Island but we liked just to stay on the Waikiki beach as well, it may be crowded for some people, but I think it´s not worse then when you live in Europe and go to Croatia for a holiday – I thought it is gonna be much worse, like more people, so I really liked it the way it was, the place – beach, main road – is alive but not annoying.

I would definitely stayed again, thank you all from the staff for helping us to have the best holiday time,

We LOVED Hotel Renew. It was close to everything- but not too close.
I mean, you walk 50 steps and you are on the main street if Waikiki with the beach and shops. It is private and beautiful. The shuttles go straight out the front of the hotel and push bike rentals are next door. I would reccomend a Deluxe king suite room. The rooms are super modern and the beds are the world’s comfiest beds! My partner and I had an absolute blast at Hotel Renew. Amazing facilities and incredibly clean. You go out & when you get back the rooms are all done up again for you, the staff are so friendly (Paul- you were amazing help!) and free Wifi is great!
I loved Hotel Renew and I really couldn’t think of anything bad to say at all.
And I am the very picky!
We will 100% be back!

Aloha to your soul

It’s time to reboot. The sound of the ocean echoes in your ear and as you sit in that crowded little cubicle, you can almost feel the crinkle of sand between your toes. Hawaii is one of those magical places that never truly leaves you…the ‘aloha’ nature of the land and genuine serenity keeps you coming back for more.

As the islands evolve, so do their luxury properties—Oahu has just introduced its first true designer boutique property, Hotel Renew. Hotel Renew mirrors the natural environment of the island, incorporating basic natural elements such as water, earth and fire into the overall design. It’s an oasis of casual elegance and exceptional tranquility, just a few steps from Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii.

‘O ka wai leo mopua ke lono nei
E ‘ale, e kumoho, e hu aukahi
I hear the sweetly voiced water
Let it ripple, Let it rise, Let it flow

Hotel Renew is not a big corporate resort or a generic chain hotel. Instead the environment here is all about relaxed living, not overly stuffy modernism. The style is simplistic and to the point, a subtle and calming contrast to the vibrant energy of Waikiki. 72 luxury suites repeat the natural environment of Oahu and focus on the elements. The rooms, designed in the spirit of wellness, immediately envelop you with a sense of ease and comfort, and serve as an elegant backdrop for your own memories. It’s the perfect marriage of sexy chic and casual coastal.

Skip out of the office simply for the wide Pacific beaches of Honolulu, the striking views of Ko’olau’s pali (cliffs) and the laid-back “aloha” feeling you can’t help absorbing while you’re here. There’s something very special about the stunning Oahu landscape, local rain forest and the humming vibrant downtown juxtaposed next to each other. Take in the vibrant downtown arts scene; visit the memorial at Pearl Harbor for a historic afternoon. Take a late night stroll on the tiki-torch-lit beach or hang ten on the waves. Taste the local poki. The island is literally your oyster.

Indulge. Relax. Renew. Discover wani pana. For the natives, that means celebrated places. A deep breath of tropical air and the scent of a fragrant island lei around your neck.
